The Fifty-Fourth Biennial Convention of the Northern Wisconsin District
Our convention theme is Christ High Ascended. Nearly a quarter of the way into the twenty-first century we see a world in conflict, where the devil and his army seem to have the upper hand. What joy and confidence is ours knowing that our Savior and King rules it all for the good of his people! In convention worship, we’ll dwell on the glory of this unseen kingdom by using three phrases from the hymn whose title matches our convention theme: (1) Death’s Dominion Defeated, (2) Gloriously Reigning, (3) We are his witnesses.
The convention opens and closes with devotions in God’s Word, and a communion service will take place Tuesday evening in the Fox Valley Lutheran High School auditorium starting at 5:00 pm. Pastor Robb Raasch of Mount Olive in Appleton will serve as preacher for our evening service.

"Your Kingdom Come" - Pastor Karl Schultz, Zion rhinelander
Pastor Karl Schultz of Zion in Rhinelander will present a scriptural, confessional essay on the second petition of the Lord's Prayer. In our nation's politically-charged environment, there can be some confusion between the Lord's kingdom of grace and the God-ordained kingdom of earthly peace and order. Add to that the natural desire in each sinner's flesh to resist the authorities God has established, and we can see even more clearly the importance of the second petition: Lord, not my kingdom, but your kingdom come. But even before we pray, we know the Lord's answer. Our Savior and King rules our hearts and lives and all things in this world always for the good of his people. The more firmly we grasp this gospel truth, the more confidently we face the real challenges of living in the kingdom of this world.

"Digital citizenship" by pastor ben workentine, st. mark Green bay
What does it mean to "love your neighbor" when that neighbor lives on a different continent?
Pastor Ben Workentine of St. Mark in Green Bay will present practical insights for 21st century believers. As of October 2023, the global internet users eclipsed 5.3 billion, a whopping 65.7% of the world's population. This digital landscape presents a unique challenge for Christians. Lutherans have long recognized the left- and right-hand kingdoms of the Lord of Creation, but what about the online kingdom? It is ruled by its own distinct set of rules, laws, and unspoken norms. How can a Christian - especially a pastor or lay leader - effectively embody the role of a "good citizen" in this modern Areopagus of ideas? The online kingdom raises dilemmas about engagement—should the Christian post or lurk? Like or leave alone? Respond or scroll? We live as innocent as doves and shrewd as snakes, but what does that really look like? We'll explore what it looks like for those who claim the name of Christ to live as Digital Citizens. |
